Sports / stadium broadcast mono fold: field, crowd, announcer, and FX beds

Field mics, crowd arrays, announcer booth, and FX beds feel rich in the truck and on stadium cans. On TV, radio, stadium PA, or phone highlight reels, body and crowd energy often thin or cancel when those paths share the same content a few milliseconds apart, or when a stereo bed was never folded before delivery. That is usually polarity and arrival time between field/crowd/announcer paths, plus stereo FX that fight on LoRo. Fix polarity and small delays first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds before mono fold.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a broadcast compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for matrix gain structure or mono audition of the TX or PA bus. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What sports / stadium phase failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the TX / PA / highlight bus (not only truck headphones). Flip a utility to mono.
  2. A/B field muted vs open under crowd arrays. Note what disappears: crowd body, impact, announcer clarity.
  3. Solo pairs: field vs crowd, announcer vs field bleed, stereo FX vs mono fold, PA matrix vs TX.
  4. Check correlation on the delivery bus, then with crowd muted vs full.

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Polarity between field, crowd, and announcer paths

Flip field vs crowd arrays, or announcer vs field bleed, when body or clarity returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase. Related: broadcast delivery.

2. Small delay align field / crowd to the hero image

Field mics often arrive earlier than distant crowd arrays. A few samples of delay (or nudge to the hero crowd or TX image) often restores body better than any widener.

3. One hero crowd / field image to TX or PA

Do not send every field, array, and FX path all hot into TV, radio, or stadium PA. Pick a hero image, keep extras muted or low. Parallel stacks are classic hollow-crowd on phone fold. Related: film / TV LoRo.

4. Prefer hero crowd/field as the body; quieter color FX

FX beds should color impact and stings, not replace the hero image for TX or PA. If every bed sits at full level under loud crowd, mono fold almost always hollows body. Pull FX first.

5. Skip wideners and Haas on FX / crowd beds before fold

Short-delay width and stereo imagers make truck headphones huge and phones hollow. Keep critical crowd body and announcer speech centered for TX and PA.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo crowd or FX bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

Sports broadcast / stadium checklist (to send)

1. Label field vs crowd vs announcer vs FX paths

Name field mics, crowd arrays, booth, and FX beds so operators know what hits TX, radio, or stadium PA. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.

2. Mono-check delivery bus alone, then with full crowd

Solo crowd body in mono. Then open announcer and FX in mono. Note fights between FX color and hero crowd. Related: master bus mono.

3. Watch phone highlight and social destinations

Most highlight viewers hear mono or near-mono. Guides: YouTube / social, OBS livestream.

4. Optional null / mono workflow before air

Host-agnostic habit before you go live or print: master bus mono checklist.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo delivery bus in mono → polarity field vs crowd vs announcer → delay-align field → one hero crowd/field image → quieter FX under hero → skip Haas/imagers → mono-check with full matrix → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a crowd/FX bed → fold again for TV / radio / PA / highlights.
